When I introduced everyone to The Daring Dad earlier this year and shared with you the beginning of my running journey I wrote about how it was time for me to re-engage with the world after isolating myself for the past few years in my role as a Stay-at-Home Dad. I am not one for small gestures in my life, more of the “go big or go home” type and in the past rarely looked away from a big project or challenge. In that vein I spent a lot of time thinking about what I could do that would feed my entrepreneurial spirit, revolve around running and community, and help amazing organizations in need of funds to continue their inspiring work. Hmmmm, what could I do? (picture light bulb turning on in a tired Dad brain) Start a brand new 5k race of course! I immediately sought the blessing of our esteemed Founder Allison, and with a wary look in her eye she said “go for it!”, and off I went. With the help of an amazing group of people I present to you the…..
The race/party, and yes it will be a PARTY!, will be held Friday, September 12th to Sunday, September 14th somewhere in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. (Don’t worry, we know where just building some suspense here). How about free babysitting and a pajama party for your kids while you and your significant other attend an amazing concert? Does that sound awesome? (cue infomercial theme) But wait, there’s more! How about a Not So Normal pre-race dinner, with babysitting and a pizza party available for the kids again if you want to make it another date night, at 1 of 5 awesome local restaurants? Yep, you’re all in now aren’t ya? On Sunday, September 14th we close out the weekend Sunday morning September, 14th with a really fun and Not So Normal 5k run complete with live music, festivities, and the best race/swag bag ever!
The proceeds of the race will go to The Carrboro ArtsCenter and The NC Children’s Promise, who each do inspirational work in our community, plus an additional beneficiary I will announce a bit later . We are also asking for food items for PORCH and TABLE who do such important work in our communities, and/or books for Book Harvest who works to make sure everyone has access to reading. We are blessed with our outstanding Title Sponsors, Fleet Feet of Carrboro, O2 Fitness, and 300 East Main; with more to come of course. Registration will open in mid-late April and will be limited to the first 1,000 participants so mark your calenders now to save the date. Kids 8 an under will be FREE and have their own “mini-track” to run.
There is so much more about this event I cannot wait to share with all of you in the weeks and months to come. Our goal is to make this the best family-friendly event the area has ever seen. Allison, Sarah, and I could never have taken on a task such as this without all of your loyal support and we are truly grateful and humbled. So get off the couch and start running, race ya!
