Of course, we all know and love the Museum of Life + Science for being the fantastic family place it is (complete with Tina Turner Alpacas, a new Blast Off Exhibit, a holiday Wonderland Express, and the popular Santa Train), but did you know that they offer a series for adults only called Museum AfterHours? Fan.tas.tic.
I was invited to attend the Science of Beer event. Even though these adult-only events have been happening for a long time, this was the first time I had been. Every AfterHours events varies in theme but they are always great.
These events usually start at 6:30 pm – after the museum closes to the general public (hence the “afterhours” title). If you want to attend one of these I recommend that you purchase tickets in advance from the website (see below) and plan to arrive a little early. For the Science of Beer event the line to get in was quite long, although it moved fast. These events are popular and, therefore, draw a crowd.
It is worth it, though. Outside, as you are waiting in line, some of your favorite food trucks are there to keep you happy with food to buy. For Science of Beer we could choose between The Parlour, OnlyBurger, and Pie Pushers. Yum. (PS- You can take your food in to the Museum if you choose.)
Once you get inside the museum opens up into amazing things. For the Science of Beer tables rotated between NC breweries with samples and hands-on exhibits to learn how to home brew and see what makes beers unique. DJs spun records (if that is, indeed, what they do anymore) so it had a festive adult-only vibe.
This is really a fantastic, creative date night option for you and your special 21+ somebody (or a ladies night out?). Prices vary depending on the event.
Lines to the tables to taste lengthened considerably as the evening progressed but it was never so crowded it was unenjoyable or hard to get a beer. We had all the beer tasting we could want.
So you missed Science of Beer, but there are 2 more great AfterHours events coming up:
October 17th is all about BRAINS. Sounds gross at first blush but is pretty cool when you read on, especially given it is the Halloween season:
Join the Museum AfterHours crew and our partners at Duke’s Institute for Brain Science as we get insane in the membrane with a night full of brainy fun. Get touchy-feely with real brains, ask brain scientists your most burning cranial questions and play mad mind games! Don’t forget to save time to explore the museum exhibits, grab a bite from your favorite local food trucks, jam out to our featured DJ and, of course, slurp a brain-shaped JELL-O shot.
Then Februarty 20th is the SCIENCE OF EATS:
Calling all foodies! Get ready for the tastiest event on the block from your favorite Museum AfterHours group. Join us at EATS as all your favorite foodie spots from across the Triangle converge on the Museum for a night of delectable, delicious science. Explore the science behind what makes those samples so darn good, meet food scientists, chat with local farmers and discover the culinary geniuses behind all your favorite eateries. With our usual food trucks on-site, DJ tunes and plenty of cold Triangle craft beer to go around, the only thing missing is you and your appetite!
My crew and I had a good time at this and within 2 hours of being there still hadn’t exhausted everything there was to see and experience.
I encourage you to check it out!
